TIRANA, June 22 – The Chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), Sali Berisha has condemned the decision to boycott the European Union Summit in his speech at the round table with experts and diplomats on “Return Albania to the European Road”.
Berisha warned on Wednesday strong protests to defend, as he put it, the western vocation of Albania and Albanians.
“Today is the main call: To stand up and face, not to hand over our fate to Belgrade, not to hand over the decision-making of this country to Belgrade, but to resist. For me there is no stronger reason than this to rise. Every kind of limit of imagination has been crossed,” Berisha said.
The former PM expressed the opinion that DP should organize a ‘powerful protest’. “This is a motive in a very existential way for our nation. A sold, unsold man, whoever he is, can never play with our destiny this way. Edi Rama has transformed Tirana into a small Belgrade. We cannot be a small Belgrade. We are the capital of Albania and of Albanians,” Berisha stressed.
“Between Belgrade and Brussels, Rama has chosen Belgrade,” Berisha said.
“In this process of acceptance by Edi Rama of Serbian hegemony in the region, a trilateral alliance has been formed with the old Yugoslavia plus Albania, that Kosovo is considered part of the territory of Serbia. Ties have been consolidated not only with Belgrade, but also with Moscow In this process. This process has brought a rift and a cold war between Albania and Kosovo,” said Berisha.
Earlier Berisha announced that protests against the skyrocketing prices would be organized but a senior DP official said on Tuesday that protests will start in September. It is not known what will happen with the second announcement for protest by Berisha’s DP.
In the meantime PM Edi Rama announced on Wednesday that Albania will attend the Summit of the EU Council with the Western Balkans countries withdrawing the decision to boycott it. The same stance was decided by Serbia and North Macedonia, the promoters of the Open Balkans. /Argumentum.al
