TIRANA, June 2 – The homage ceremony in honor of the former President of the Republic of Albania, Bujar Nishani, who passed away at the age of 56 a few days ago, was held with high state honors in Tirana on Thursday.
The Council of Ministers of Albania declared Thursday a day of national mourning in honor of former President Nishani, while the homage ceremony was held at the premises of the Presidency of Albania.
Part of the homage were senior officials, such as the President of Albania, Ilir Meta, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Lindita Nikolla, ministers, members of the Albanian Parliament, as well as various officials and personalities from Kosovo, North Macedonia and other countries.
In a speech during the ceremony, President Meta stressed that Nishani was determined and committed to building the rule of law and guaranteeing the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.
“Bujar Nishani believed in democracy and the rule of law and this conviction was best evidenced in the management of very important ministries, such as of order and justice. He will be remembered for his calmness, strength of argument and loyalty to the principles and values. As head of state, Bujar Nishani worked with rare dedication in defense of the constitution,” said Meta.
President said that coming to politics from the armed forces, Nishani brought the best virtues of the military in the political and institutional life of the country.
After the ceremony, the dead body of former President Nishani was escorted with high state honors to the cemetery where he was laid to rest.
Nishani passed away in Germany on May 28, where he was hospitalized for several weeks due to problems from a lung infection and other health problems.
Bujar Nishani was born on September 29, 1966 in the city of Durrës. He completed his higher studies at the Military Academy “Skënderbej” in Tirana and for Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Law, University of Tirana.
The political career of former President Nishani has passed in several stages in the Democratic Party of Albania, as well as in the country’s institutions.
In addition to the post of President of Albania in the years 2012-2017, Nishani has also held the post of Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice of Albania.
