TIRANA, May 24 – The Academy of Sciences of Albania has come out against the law approved by the parliament for the management of the Butrint National Archaeological Park. At a conference with academics that turned into a debate on Tuesday, the head of the academy, Skender Gjinushi acknowledged that the scientific institution was not involved in the process.
“It simply came to our notice after approval. We did not think they would approve it in Parliament so soon. First it was up to the government to consult with the Academy and to consult with the relevant institutes. Institutes (Archeology and Monuments) can not remain indifferent or agree to be excluded. Personally, I think that there is a gap here,” said Gjinushi.
Archaeologist Neritan Ceka said archaeologist Richard Hodges in a 2012 article called Illyrian civilization a myth. “It says about us archaeologists” the main line of research supported by the authorities was the formation of a myth of Illyrian origin. I have nothing to do with Richard Hodges. We are on two different platforms, I am with UNESCO and now tell me who Richard Hodges is with. Preservation of memory and territorial integrity. This is the mission given us by UNESCO, and not Enver Hoxha, but this gentleman remembers that it was given us by Enver Hoxha,” said Ceka.
The former director of Butrint Park, Auron Tare, was harsh with the archaeologists and reminded that the Albanian specialists were left out in the process. “You are not straightforward. Why do you beat about the bush or you hope to get any project? Protect the name of Albanian archeology, stay with this thing. It is not allowed in America for a foreign foundation to change the law, make the management plan, create the board, introduce itself, take Butrint and manage it for itself. This work is not allowed in America, it is not allowed! Why do you allow it? Here you are, professors. Why do you allow it?” said Tare.
The management of Butrint according to the law approved by the parliament on?Monday and the law on inheritage will be done by a foundation created with private and public cooperation, with a board of five people, where the ministry of culture is part. /Argumentum.al
