On August 4, the Albanian Minister of Finance and Economy, Ms. Anila Denaj signed a grant agreement with KfW Development Bank for feasibility studies on the solid waste sector in Albania, with the amount of EUR 1.8 million. The funds for carrying out the studies have been made available by the German Government. Solid Waste Management is one important field within the priority area of municipal infrastructure.
With the support of the German Government through KfW, an investment masterplan has been prepared for the solid waste management sector and the latter was approved by the National Territory Council in January 2019. The study will provide the necessary in depth preparation of the investment measures and the development of models to operate and maintain the infrastructure in a sustainable way, in line with EU standards. The study will be prepared in close coordination with two studies financed by the EU-WBIF as well as ongoing assistance by the Swiss SECO to jointly structure a comprehensive investment support to the sector.
For financing the actual investments, the Albanian and the German Government had already agreed previously on an Investment Program amounting at EUR 62 million to jointly transform the solid waste management sector towards EU requirements. German financial cooperation has supported the construction of the sanitary landfill in Maliq, Korca area and is currently funding the construction of the new sanitary landfill for the Vlora area including composting and sorting facilities as well as collection equipment.
