TIRANA – August has started with no relief of the coronavirus disease as Saturday, its first day of the current month, registered 4 fatalities and 120 new cases of infections in Albania.
In its daily bulletin the Ministry of Health reported that currently 119 patients are being treated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital and the “Shefqet Ndroqi” Hospital where 18 are in intensive care and 6 intubated.
A detailed statistics of COVID-19 situation since its outbreak on March 9 this year showed the following figures on 1 August 2020: total tests 41,709, positive cases 5,396, cured cases 2,961, active cases 2,274 and fatalities161.
In a balance sheet on the last month, Dr. Erion Dasho, well known of his public expertise on the course of the deadly epidemic, said July was a painful month for Albania.
“93 lives lost by COVID-19 mean over 33 deaths per 1 million inhabitants. Spain, which was hit so hard during the first months of the epidemic and with a population 17 times higher than Albania, had only 90 deaths during the same period!” Dr. Dasho, Director for Digital Health and Innovation at management4health GmbH
University of Regensburg, said in a detailed analysis issued on social media outlets on Saturday.
Further on he said that if comparisons are made for 1 million inhabitants, the picture clearly looks worse.
“33 deaths per 1 million inhabitants in Albania are 16 times higher than in Germany and even 5 times higher than in Italy, which was the country hit hardest by COVID-10 in Europe. During July, Germany had only 2 deaths and Italy only 6 deaths per 1 million inhabitants,” he said expressing concern over the future progress of the disease. /argumentum.al
