TIRANA – Albania has taken a seat of Vice-President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. This was announced by Ambassador Besiana Kadare, Permanent Representative of Albania to the United Nations in New York in a note on Twitter on Wednesday.
“Proud to announce that Albania is elected Vice-President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly! It’s a distinct honor to serve as VP of this historical session and I’m looking forward to working with Ambassador Volkan Bozkir , the President of the General Assembly from Turkey,” said the full announcement of Kadare.
The Foreign Ministry said on Twitter that being elected Vice-President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly is a historic achievement for Albania. “It demonstrates the growing active role of Albania in multilateral diplomacy and support to the UN,” said the Foreign Ministry.
In the meantime the Turkish Ambassador, Volkan Bozkir, elected President of the United Nations General Assembly at its 75th Session, extended his congratulations to all the Vice-Presidents of the 75th UN General Assembly. “l am pleased that we will work together at this historic session and I am looking forward to that,” said Bozkir.
Amal Mudallali, Lebanon’s top diplomat at the UN, will become one of the vice presidents of its General Assembly after the Middle East country was voted to the position on Monday.
Twenty-one vice presidents are elected for each year-long session of the body and they are selected to represent all areas of the world. Traditionally the world’s most powerful nations and those with permanent seats on the Security Council do not run to be a president or vice president of the General Assembly.
Turkey’s Volkan Bozkir was elected to preside over the 75th session of the UNGA from September. Although the agenda for the year is yet to be established, he has said that with the heavy workload already in place he will not look to launch new initiatives rather than get concrete action on key areas already being worked on.
In his statement of vision, Bozkir said as quoted by ‘The National’ on Wednesday he plans to work to “ensure impartial and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and full respect for international humanitarian law in conflicts and crises.” He also said that achieving progress on UN Development Goals will also be key./argumentum.al
