TIRANA – The rapid and unabated spread of the coronavirus epidemic with the highest infections, hospitalization and fatalities over the last ten days seems to not worry Albanians as the government and PM Edi Rama have apparently surrendered to the disease. lea
“The government has nothing in hand! Everything is in our hands,” said the popular infectious diseases doctor, Pellumb Pipero whose alarming appeal to Albanians to be careful towards COVID-19 has become the highlight of the day with numerous social media publishing it in full on Sunday.
Some 71 people were confirmed infected with COVID-19 in the past 24 hours bringing to 784 the total number of coronavirus active people in Albania, while another coronavirus-related death was reported. The number of positive Covid-19 cases since the pandemic outbreak in the country has reached 1962, said Genta Qirjako, a specialist at the Institute of Public Health in her daily update on the situation.
Qirjako informed also that the number of hospitalized patients at the infectious diseases hospital in Tirana has climbed to 78, the highest figure since the outbreak of the pandemic on March 9 this year.
“Hospitalizations of citizens in need of medical treatment have increased as a result of COVID-19. Currently, 78 patients are being treated in the infectious diseases ward and 10 of them are in intensive care, while 1 is intubated,” said the ISHP specialist.
There is a sharp growth of infections in Tirana with 31 confirmed cases followed by Shkodra with 12. Infections have been registered in 9 other towns of the country during the last 24 hours.
According to her, the Health Ministry repeats its call on citizens to be cautious, to respect hygiene measures, physical distance, avoid contacts and put on masks when it is not possible to maintain the distance.
Dr. Pipero’s Warning: Government Can Do Nothing!
More alarmed than ever Dr. Pipero wished ‘good morning’ Albanians reminding them that Albania’s borders are being closed, referring to Montenegro, and drawing their attention to the sad news to hear that there are over 20 patients being hospitalized in one day.
“Wake up with a message from me and us, the sleepless. It is sad to hear that Albania’s borders are closed, it is even sadder to hear that today, a few months after the outbreak of the epidemic, more than 20 patients are hospitalized in the so-called Covid-1 hospital,” said Pipero in his unusual message.
He warned that the virus is still around. “We still don’t have a vaccine. We still don’t have a cure for it. But how and with what can we fight it. Just by respecting distance and wearing masks.”
Dr. Pipero closes the message with the appeal:”Keep your distance and keep the mask! Otherwise you will take us back in time. Please listen to me today as tomorrow will be too late. The government has nothing in hand! Everything is in our hands.” /argumentum.al
