TIRANA, August 13 – The statements made by the former right-wing British politician, Nigel Farage about the illegal Albanian immigrants in Great Britain have caused outrage on social media, especially on Twitter, after one of his last statements. “Now that one in ten foreign parents who give birth to children in Great Britain are Albanians, can you imagine how the ratio will be in five years?” he asked as quoted by local media on Saturday.
Sidita Kushi, an assistant professor in Massachusetts, responded on Twitter: In the context of the entire population of the United Kingdom, this increase among Albanians is negligible.
Farage’s tweet quoted the UK organization Migration Watch, which referred to a Daily Mail article which said “Albanians are among the most frequent parents to give birth to children in the UK for the first time”.
In a video released three days ago, Farage also said that the Albanians trying to cross the English Channel to enter the UK were not desperate poor people as the BBC is trying to portray them. “No, they’re young guys and a lot of them are actually pretty aggressive,” he said.
Farage, 58, led the right-wing UKIP party and later the Brexit party until 2021. He played a key role in winning the Brexit referendum in 2016, which took Britain out of the EU. Concern over the rise of illegal immigration from Albania came under the spotlight last week after media reports from the Daily Mail tabloid, among others, citing UK military intelligence documents, claimed that four out of 10 illegal immigrants of recent times in Britain were from Albania. /Argumentum al
