TIRANA – All the attention is diverted to medical staff as Mother Teresa University Hospital (QSUT) has turned into a dangerous hotspot with rising new cases of infected medical employees among whom doctors and nurses.
This was confirmed by the specialist at the Institute of Public Health, Eugena Tomini in the daily update on the progress of the coronavirus pandemic in Albania on Friday.
“Out of 276 persons who were tested for the virus 23 resulted positive and 12 of them are in Tirana,” said Tomini who explained that 8 are contacts of previous positive cases and 4 are new cases in the tracking process.
All 57 medical staff and patients at QSUT were tested and they came out to be negative. According to the ISHP specialist, the other cases of the last 24 hours were found in Mat (6), Lushnja (4) and Durres (1).
The total number of infections topped 1099 on Friday and the general mood is not good when this Balkan country is preparing to make the ‘Grand Opening’ on June 1.
“There are currently 215 people active with COVID- 19, mainly in Tirana,” said Tomini.
However PM Edi Rama said on Thursday evening that there will be no withdrawal from the expected easing of the lockdown. He announced that the timeframe of restrictions next weekend (May 30-31) will be the same like before but, as Rama said, this is going to be the last one./argumentum.al
