TIRANA, August 16 – Two Italian citizens were arrested as they were trying to sell a quantity of fake gold to a jeweler in the city of Elbasan on Tuesday, local media reported. Fortunato Maddaloni and Rikardi Gennario, aged 67 and 76 respectively, started their fraud activity in Montenegro in June and then in Tirana during the summer months where, according to the police, they sold fake gold worth 200,000 Euros.
The two Italian citizens had arrived in Albania some time ago and were deceiving the jewelers by initially giving them pure gold as evidence.
After making the deal, they sold them the gold in the form of grains mixed with other metals.
During the operation, the police found 3 kilograms of suspected fake gold, 160 grams of pure gold, 4 mobile phones, 1500 Euros and 150 Swiss Francs.
