TIRANA – The United opposition has strongly condemned the attempt of PM and head of Socialist Party (SP) Edi Rama to break the Agreement on Electoral Reform signed by political parties on June 5 this year.
“This unprecedented act breaks the consensus reached with the mediation and support of our strategic partners US and EU, endangers the stability of the country, and threatens seriously Albania’s chances to start membership negotiations with the European Union,” said the statement issued by the Democratic Party – led united opposition on Monday.
Further on it said that this diabolical act is being carried out only for the personal power of Edi Rama and is motivated by his fear of elections risking severely the interests of Albanian citizens, who have been abandoned and betrayed by the outgoing prime minister, leaving them alone in the face of the deepest pandemic crisis and the economic crisis that is a direct consequence of the failure and irresponsibility of him and his government.
In addition the statement said that it has never happened before that the Constitution of Albania and the rules of the game of an electoral race can be changed unilaterally and without consensus between the parties participating in the elections. “This low provocation and typical behavior of the autocrat who is afraid of free and fair elections, aims to provoke political conflict in the country on the eve of the next elections, which are key to Albania’s democracy and progress on its European path.”
The united opposition announced that it has officially informed the President and our strategic partners about this unprecedented act that further aggravates the political climate in Albania putting it in a course of unpredictable developments.
