TIRANA, August 31 – It is over the enigma in the police cupola over the question if its head has resigned, has been dismissed or is on duty. A government decision made on Wednesday clarified everything: The Council of Ministers decided to fire the General Director of the State Police, Gledis Nano.
Interior Minister Bledi Çuçi said after the government meeting that “this dismissal is related to the non-fulfillment of the objectives we had set regarding the General Director of Police and is mainly related to the situation created in recent months.”
Çuçi emphasized that this situation requires a stronger response and a more efficient management of the State Police.
The duties will be exercised by the Deputy General Director of the Police, Tonin Vocaj, until the appointment of the new Director of the State Police.
Gledis Nano was appointed head of Albania’s police on October 6 last year after a ‘promising’ career in the Directorate of Anti-Terrorism and qualifications in America after the resignation of the former director, Ardi Veliu. Nano has a career of over 20 years in the police and he was the director of the Anti-Terrorist Directorate in the State Police for the last 5 years.
He is a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy in Quantico Virginia and has participated in many other training sessions with allied security agencies, and has worked closely with international partners.
It is the first time that a general police director is discharged under such charges because the previous were ‘released’ from duty being assigned in other lower rank positions.
Asked by the media about the law and order situation in the country, Çuçi said that “of course the work will be comprehensive, but what you mentioned was one of the main reasons that the State Police and the main leader of the State Police require a stronger reaction against all these phenomena and a more efficient management.”
In a comment on the change of the head of the intelligence service, SHISH, Çuçi said that he has not been fired, but that Oljan Kanushi has been appointed deputy director. “It has been filled a vacancy kept pending for a long time due to the contradictions or conflict between the institution of the president and SHISH, a vacancy that was filled today precisely with Mr. Kanushi,” explained the minister.
