TIRANA, September 7 – Britain has said its National Cyber Security Centre had determined Iranian state-linked actors were “almost certainly” responsible for a cyberattack against the Albanian government in July.
“Iran’s reckless actions showed a blatant disregard for the Albanian people, severely restricting their ability to access essential public services,” British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday.
“The UK is supporting our valuable partner and NATO ally. We join Albania and other allies in exposing Iran’s unacceptable actions.”
Albania broke its diplomatic relations with Iran ordering its diplomats and embassy staff to leave Tirana within 24 hours, after an investigation into a cyberattack in July, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Wednesday.
“The government has decided with immediate effect to end diplomatic relations with Islamic Republic of Iran,” Rama said in a video statement sent to the media.
In its first reaction official Tehran said that
Iran strongly condemned on Wednesday Albania’s decision to cut the diplomatic ties, rejecting as “baseless claims” Albania’s reasons for the move, a statement by the Iranian foreign ministry said.
