TIRANA, September 11 – The head of the government, Edi Rama, has responded to criticism that schoolbooks received for free should be new when they are given to young people, as they are damaged and cannot be used for the next generation. The PM made that comment on the eve of the start of the school year in Albania on September 12.
Rama said that this method is also applied to teach children to save books and that they are valuable that should be shared. Rama further said that it would be good for those who hand over the damaged schoolbooks to buy them next year.
“I have followed some comments about the schoolbooks that pass from hand to hand, that are given for free in our country, there is a three-year cycle and the claims are that they are used and not new… It must be understood that this is not a question of money, this is political, which we did not invent and which is used in much richer countries than us,” said Rama in a post on social networks.
The PM advised the teachers to educate pupils to keep the schoolbooks like new. “Perhaps there should be a rule that those who hand in the books in a condition that they can no longer be used, they should buy them the next year, no longer get them for free. It’s not about the majority, they do the right thing, but for that minority who did not do this, there should be a sanction,” said Rama. /Argumentum.al
