TIRANA – As preparations are underway for the establishment of reception centers, it is reported that dozens of Syrian refugees arrived in the city of Gjirokastra, southern Albania, last Saturday.
The first group of about 50 refugees is accommodated at the Gerhot Reception Center, about 2 kilometers north of Gjirokastra, a town bordering Greece. They are Syrians of all ages, but mostly families with many children. There is also a Palestinian family in the group.
The influx of refugees to Greece has increased rapidly after Turkey opened its border something which has prompted Albanian authorities to plan the establishment of reception centers. It is unveiled that 6 such centers will be set up and most of them will be located in southern part of the country.
The Syrian emigrants entered Albanian territory through the Kapshtica border checkpoint, according to reports.
Syrians have been seen frequently even in Tirana, and capital’s citizens have revealed content of talk with them on some occasions.
Diplomatic sources have told argumentum. al on condition of anonymity that Albania should take strict standard measures in face of the influx of a great number of refugees. It has been reported earlier, although not officially, that this Balkan country would allegedly admit about 30,000 refugees. (argumentum.al)
