TIRANA – Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has said that he will take final steps next week enabling formation of a new government after no-confidence vote on Albin Kurti’s cabinet on March 25 this year, said daily Express.
Thaci wrote on Twitter on Sunday that tariffs and reciprocity with Serbia need to be dropped in order for Kosovo to strengthen US and EU support.
“Next week I will take the final constitutional steps to enable the formation of a new government with full legitimacy of Parliament, capable to fight COVID -19 and serve the people. Tariffs and reciprocity need to be dropped in order to strengthen USA and EU support for Kosova,” Thaci said.
Kosovo President has sent four letters to Kurti in his capacity as leader of the Vetevendosje asking him that to propose a new candidate for prime minister as winners of elections last year. The Vetevendosje is refusing to nominate a new candidate and asks holding of early elections once the coronavirus pandemic is over. Legal experts say that according to the Constitution of Kosovo only the winner of the elections has the right to nominate a candidate for prime minister, but the Constitution is ambiguous when it comes to a timeframe of making such a proposal.
Haradinaj: EU Mediation under US Leadership in Kosovo-Serb Dialogue
In the meantime it is reported that the head of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj has sent a letter to EU Representative for Dialogue Miroslav Lacak stating, among other things, that dialogue with Federica Mogherini, former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has jeopardized Kosovo. Haradinaj also assessed that the involvement of the United States in the dialogue with Belgrade has brought new energy to the process.
“The AAK’s stance on dialogue remains unchanged: the EU-mediated dialogue under former High Representative Federica Mogherini departed from significant topics, jeopardizing Kosovo’s achievements and seriously undermining the EU credibility to mediate dialogue in the future. Then, I see the current approach of the High Representative, Josep Borrell as an attempt to stall the final agreement and continue the endless process of dialogue,” Haradinaj said in his letter as quoted by Kosovo Online on Sunday. AAK’s head, a former PM, pointed out that Kosovo has recognized the role of Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emanuel Macron to personally engage in a legally binding comprehensive agreement.
According to him, the new US energy in the dialogue has fueled hopes in Kosovo.
“I have been loud and clear to continuously seek an active US role in the dialogue. Now the situation with the new US energy dedicated to Kosovo has raised hopes that the decade-long Kosovo-Serbia dialogue will be finalized with mutual recognition in existing borders. However, we see EU facilitation under US leadership as positive,” Haradinaj said in the letter. /argumentum.al
