TIRANA, June 1 – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka said that with the Presidency of Albania in the UN Security Council begins an intensive month of work having an ambitious agenda.
“The first day of the Albanian Presidency in the UN Security Council marked start of an intense month of work with an ambitious agenda! The first event is the signing of the document on the strengthening of responsibility and justice for serious violations of international law with the Prime Minister, Edi Rama on Wednesday,” said Xhaçka through social networks.
According to her, Prime Minister Rama will lead the open high-level debate of the Security Council on international accountability, as one of the priorities of Albania in the Security Council, further emphasized due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in the morning of June 2.
The meetings chaired by Rama will be followed by several other activities during June, including at the ministerial level, such as: open debate led by Xhaçka on the topic Women, Peace and Security under the theme “The role of regional organizations for the implementation of GPS in situations of political unrest and violent seizure of power ”(June 15); information session, led by Xhaçka, on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, where the European Union will be invited (June 16); Open debate on the Security Council’s Working Methods, chaired by Albania’s Ambassador to the UN, NY (June 28).
This is the first time that Albania holds the presidency of the SC during its two-year term in the Council. Albania will have the presidency again in October 2023 a few months before the end of its mandate. During May, the presidency of the Security Council was held by the US.
