TIRANA, September 20 – A survey published by the Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM), entitled ‘Trust in government’ for the year 2021 and quoted by Reporter.al on Tuesday, shows that most Albanians feel insecure in their daily life, while 41% of respondents want to leave the country.
The main reasons for the feeling of insecurity, according to the survey, are criminality, injustice, the level of unemployment, health problems and natural disasters. The survey was conducted during the period 6-21 November 2021 and focused on participants from 61 municipalities of Albania. “83.1% of Albanians perceive low-level corruption as widespread or very widespread, while 83.7% perceive large or high-level corruption as widespread,” the report states. The five institutions that were ranked as the most corrupt in 2021 were the judiciary, followed by health care institutions, public administration, local institutions and the police. “68.4% of citizens did not have confidence in the prosecution of high-level corruption cases, while 59.3% did not have confidence in the effective prosecution of low-level corruption cases,” the report said. In addition, the survey found that more than half of the respondents consider the central government (57.4%) and the municipalities (58.2%) as non-transparent.
On the other hand, the surveyed citizens (77%) believe that international organizations hold the government accountable more than domestic institutions. “Organizations such as NATO (73.2%), UN (71.4%), and EU (71.3%) maintained their ranking as the most trusted institutions in Albania,” said the report.
