TIRANA, September 30 – The 800 kWh threshold for households will not be applied on October 1, 2022 as it had been decided by Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Entity of Energy Regulation (ERE). This was announced by the government head himself in a video message released on Friday one day before the application of the decision which has created great frustration among people and nationwide protests have been foreseen.
“We have announced that the 800 kWh consumption threshold above the price protected by the government for family consumers is planned to enter into force on October 1. This limit aims, on the one hand, to continuously protect 96% of households, which do not exceed the threshold of 800 kW even during the winter. On the other hand, the threshold intends that 4% of consumers, who exceed this limit and consume nearly 20% of the entire amount of energy in the country, pay the real price for every kW over the limit of 800 kWh,” said Rama.
Prime Minister Rama said that “I have positive news after a discussion we had last night until late. On September 1, when we set the threshold with a protected price up to 800 kWh, the demand for energy from the Albanian energy utility, KESH, was about 17,000 Kwh, today it is about 11,000 Kwh.”
According to him, on September 1, when we launched the threshold above 800 kWh, this demand was significantly higher than it is today, and without question the drop in hot temperatures played a role in this significant decrease. But, as Rama said, there is no doubt that it is important the apparent beginning of a positive approach of the family household to save energy. “On the other hand we have had an improvement in the level in Fierza lake during the last few days. It is the main source of energy, and we expect that the forecasts for rainfalls will materialize at the end of the first ten days of October.”
The head of the government emphasized that under these conditions, based, of course, on a much more detailed analysis of all technical parameters and projections, as well as with the full commitment to use every opportunity and space that is created to ease the actual burden a little, but also the psychological impact of this situation, above all on families, which was not created by the government, but the government has the burden to manage it as best as possible, we decided that the application of the 800 kWh threshold will not enter into force in October.”
