TIRANA – Although no date has been set for the upcoming general elections due in 2021 the opposition Democratic Party (DP) has launched its electoral campaign making major issue the selection of candidates for MPs from the membership of the largest opposition force in Albania.
“”No individual will be excluded from the selection process and there are no prejudices in this process of picking up the candidates,” has said the General Secretary of the Democratic Party, Gazment Bardhi.
“No individual will be excluded from the process and there will be no prejudices on the selection of the candidacies,” he said. “If you look closely at the guidelines published last Thursday, there is a special point that instructs the coordination group to take any proposal without prejudice.”
It is the first time that such a process is applied by DP and so far it is not said a word on any pre-election agreement with the allied parties of the so-called ‘grand coalition’.
In a comment on this Bardhi said this issue will be discussed when pre-election agreements are signed in a separate process from the process of selecting candidates by the DP membership. “It has nothing to do with the internal process followed by DP. I have heard some of our allies which have expressed the will to run separately with their lists.”
Regarding the Commission for the Evaluation of Candidates, Bardhi said that there is still no decision on the people who will lead this very important process for the DP.
The DP is waiting for the start of the functioning of the Constitutional Court in order to decide on the June 30, 2019 local elections. According to the DP’s secretary general, manipulated elections must be re-run, and in this way, according to him, local government could return to legitimacy.
“The Constitutional Court will have to implement the constitution, and in the event of implementation, the local power will have to return to the principles of the Constitution,” he said. /argumentum.al
