German newspaper ‘ Süddeutsche Zeitung’ said in a commentary that the objective of Richard Grenell was to withdraw troops from Kosovo ahead of US elections through a trick called ‘peace summit’. In the meantime the commentary called on Saturday for a serious engagement of Europeans in Kosovo.
The Munich- based ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ said: “When an American wants to draw attention for a work in the Balkans, he probably should have the name Richard. The legendary diplomat Richard Holbrooke succeeded to impose peace after the bloody wars of 90′. This has been the greatest contribution of the negotiator after the Cold War. Fortunately his successor, Richard Grenell, failed because of his trick. The peace initiated by him between Serbia and Kosovo has failed because Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci is facing an indictment as a war criminal.”
According to “ Süddeutsche Zeitung”, Grenell’s motive was too simple: He aimed at ‘building a stage’ for the withdrawal of American troops from the Balkans before the US elections.
“To realize this, the Trump government would accept a land swap between Serbia and Kosovo and a great growth of the Chinese and Russian influence in the region. The hard efforts of the EU for pacification and integration of the region would be blown up with a shot,” says the article.
“Within a week, the US government has twice acted against the interests of EU states. Following the promise to deploy US troops in Poland (after their withdrawal from Germany) the unthinkable action in the Balkans has failed at least for now. The EU must now urgently and with all its might prove its influence in both of these areas of control. Europe and its neighbors must not allow themselves to be harmed by the United States during Trump’s last weeks, which we hope to be the last ones,” said German newspaper ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’. /argumentum.al
