“There can never be any European lasting nor peaceful solution by making accounts with borders and citizens. I do not believe that the Balkans needs old Balkan choices,” has said President Ilir Meta.
Despite statements and debates on the so-called exchange of territories Meta said in a news conference on Monday that the future of Kosovo and Serbia is in the EU.
This is the only objective announced by these two countries, Albanian President said, adding that the idea of border changes does not serve the foundations of the EU.
“I want to assess once again, without becoming part of the statements or comments of diplomats that the future of Kosovo and Serbia must be in the EU. This is a clearly stated objective by both countries,” said Meta.
Former White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has recently been quoted by different media as saying that Serbia and Kosovo leaders discussed a possibility of territory swap back in 2018 as an option to solve the Kosovo issue, and Tony Blair, ex-advisor to Albanian PM Edi Rama, was involved in the scheme. There have been many suppositions that the land swap between Pristina and Belgrade was a project framed by Vucic, Thaci and Rama which was backed by Bolton.
President Meta was confident that even for the EU any idea of changing borders does not serve the strengthening of the foundations of a united Europe and it is important to work for the EU.
When asked by one of the journalists whether Prime Minister Rama was also involved in these ideas, Meta said: “I want to thank Great Britain for this issue and for the future of this region for being part of the EU where we hope that Britain will be.”/argumentum.al
