TIRANA – As Albania hit the highest number of the infected persons with coronavirus on Friday when 90 new cases were confirmed Prime Minister Edi Rama blamed citizens who have not taken upon their responsibilities to check the spread of the disease.
“The supervision of the rules by the police and army is impossible. The growth of the number happens in all the countries that open up and all citizens should undertake their responsibilities,” said Rama on Friday.
Local health authorities announced that 90 new cases were confirmed during the last 24 hours setting a single-day record since the beginning of the pandemic. The growth in numbers was registered mostly in Tirana but even in the coastal areas as Durres. “The high number of infections was recorded in Tirana (36), Durres (15), Vlora (11) and Kukes and Kruja with 8 in each town,” said the official sources.
It is also specified that 11 persons are in intensive-care units while five are intubated, among whom even young people.
Even though there are five weeks that situation is aggravating with the infection diseases hospital being overloaded with infected people, and the death toll is rising jumping to 85, Rama said he did not think of returning to the lockdown.
“The first lockdown was to become self-conscious. Now we should face the situation with our health system,” he said, warning that if it is wanted a minimization of the impact of the disease, then everyone should undertake their own responsibility. We have doubled the number of tests, and it is the relevant authority that makes the decisions. In a comment if a private hospital could be included in the process of tests, Rama said the relevant authorities decide on this step.
Seeing the situation as ‘out of control’ the opposition Democratic Party (DP) senior official Tritan Shehu drew the attention to the use of face masks by citizens. He denounced the confusion of the PM on the matter saying that after a two-month delay the technical committee referred to the necessity of wearing masks. Shehu, a former health minister, called for immediate intervention by the government when the citizens’ life and country’s economy are threatened. “Time does not waste!” was the appeal of the DP’s official.
The current ‘sleep’ of the PM cannot help to be forgotten his responsibilities for the so far failure in the combat against the pandemic. /argumentum.al
