“This is an event of historical importance for Albania, which marks another cornerstone in our path of transformation to fulfill our aspirations as a nation and to contribute to making the world a better place for us and for all.”
This was stated by Prime Minister Edi Rama in a reception organized on the occasion of the mandate of Albania as a non- permanent member of the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday. Among the participants were the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka and other important personalities.
“I even doubt that the most unbridled imagination could not have been so bright as to have dreamed of this event three decades ago. At that time, Albania was a bunker in the dark,” Rama said.
The Premier added that the Security Council was created to raise its voice and to intervene in the service of the values of human rights. “The challenge is how the Council can intervene in an intelligent, reflective and timely manner to prevent massacres, to stop conflicts and to ensure lasting peace and security,” he said.
He mentioned that Albania opened its doors to Jews during the Holocaust, half a million Kosovars during the genocide of Slobodan Milosevic, thousands of MEK members, who took refuge in Albania and, finally, to thousands of Afghans who fled the reprisals of the Taliban.
“Our future in this one and only place called Earth is ultimately linked to our ability to understand and learn to live with our differences, our common aspirations, in peace and dignity. This is the task we undertake, to maintain that bright horizon in the foundation of the work of the Security Council,” said Rama. / Argumentum.al
