TIRANA, June 2 – Prime Minister Edi Rama has chaired the open debate in the UN Security Council on international accountability, placed on the agenda by Albania as one of the priorities of Albania’s program in this council.
In his introductory speech on Thursday, Rama thanked the US Ambassador, Thomas GreenField for the excellent work done during the presidency of the Security Council in May.
Further in his speech, Prime Minister Rama said that the fundamental values of human rights have been seen to be violated, while adding that all types of violations should be addressed seriously.
Rama also said that when they fail to respect the right to the truth, then the institutions become weaker. According to him, differences of opinion, disagreements are not uncommon in this Council. “They are amplified if we focus on daily politics and concerns, underlying these clear arguments are the core values that represent the real connection. It has not been easy to get here. Our fundamental human rights values continue to be systematically and massively violated.”
Rama said that all serious violations should be treated with the same importance. “We are aware that we are in extraordinary stress, and we know that when we fail to respect the right to the truth, our institutions become weaker,” Rama added.
Among other things, he focused on the case of Syria, which he said is a tragic case.
“Failure to bring the perpetrators to justice, the reporting of violations elsewhere, should not be a reason for us not to act. This brings me to the tragic aggressor in Ukraine. An unjust, unprovoked war has added to the pain of the Ukrainian nation. Unnecessary pain is being caused to millions of people. Terrible crimes are discovered every day. Crimes should not and cannot go unpunished. Albania is at the forefront of bringing the perpetrators to justice first,” he said.
In conclusion Rama said, “Today we need more deeds and we owe deeds to thousands of victims in Srebrenica or somewhere else. We owe it to countless silent faces who are unforgivable victims of sex crimes.”
As far as it is reported Albania’s PM did not say a word on the Serb genocide in Kosovo although there is a debate in the country about a resolution to denounce that genocide which was rejected by the Socialist majority of Rama. /Argumentum.al
