The Council of Albanian Ambassadors (KASH) has issued a statement following Serbia’s parliamentary elections, highlighting the role of the student movement, the strengthening of democratic standards, and the electoral rights of ethnic Albanians. The Council stresses that any political change in Belgrade should be accompanied by a constructive approach toward Kosovo and concrete efforts to normalize relations and advance European integration.
On the parliamentary elections in Serbia and the prospects for regional and European relations.
The Council of Albanian Ambassadors (CAA) has closely followed the parliamentary elections held in Serbia on 25 October. The preliminary results mark a significant change in the country’s political life, following a prolonged period of political dominance by Aleksandar Vučić and his party.
In this context, the CAA highlights the important role of the student movement and civic engagement in strengthening democratic standards, ensuring accountability and combating corruption. Expressing the will of citizens and seeking political change through mass peaceful protests are fundamental rights in any democratic system.
The Council of Albanian Ambassadors welcomes the political engagement and representation of Albanians in these elections, with preliminary projections indicating that they are expected to secure up to three parliamentary seats. At the same time, it expresses concern over the deactivation of residential addresses and the obstacles undermining Albanians’ electoral rights, practices implemented for years under Vučić’s administration.
The Council of Albanian Ambassadors calls for these issues to be addressed in accordance with European standards, alongside sustained diplomatic engagement by Albania, Kosovo, international partners and specialised international organisations.
The CAA considers that political changes in Serbia should be accompanied by a change in the country’s position towards the Republic of Kosovo and a constructive approach to regional relations and European integration.
The Council of Albanian Ambassadors reiterates that democracy does not end with electoral victory. It begins with the responsibility to govern in the service of citizens, respect institutions and build peaceful relations with neighbours.
