TIRANA – The uninterrupted spread of the coronavirus has created alarm in Albania where 66 new cases of infected people were confirmed on Thursday with a curb marking its highest quotas for more than a week.

“Some 66 cases were registered positive after 280 tests were made on suspected cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours,” said Mirela Cami, director of Health Care Operator, in the daily briefing on the current situation of the pandemic.

According to her, the infected persons came out to be mainly contacts of cases confirmed positive earlier, as well as new cases which are in the investigation process.

The geographical distribution of the spread of the disease is as following: 32 cases in Tirana, 12 in Kruja, 7 in Vlora, 6 in Durrës, 3 cases in Shkodra and Fier, 1 case in Tropoja, Lezha, and Elbasan, respectively,” said Cami.

In the meantime 9 patients were declared as recovered in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of the cured persons to 1,086.

Cami said that a 67-year-old patient from Shkodra who was confirmed positive with COVID-19 in an underlying health condition, passed away. The total toll of fatalities stands at 39 since the outbreak of the pandemic on March 9 this year.

At these uncertain times an event was held on Thursday when Ambassador Luigi Soreca, Head of EU Delegation to Albania, delivered to the Albanian Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu the third part of the EU’s assistance to Albania for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. “The delivery took place today at the Mother Teresa Hospital in Tirana.

As a press release distributed by the EU Delegation in Tirana, the delivery consists of 100 fully-equipped beds for the intensive care units, 30 electrocardiogram appliances, 20 surgical electrical aspirators, 75 manual resuscitators and other specialized equipment for the treatment of the most severe cases of respiratory deficiencies. The first two deliveries took place in May and earlier this week and consisted of personal protective equipment and supply against COVID-19, fully-equipped life-safe ambulances and other specialised equipment and devices for the intensive care units.

“The overall commitment of the EU for Albania in the fight against COVID-19 is EUR 4million for medical equipment and almost EUR 50 million for social protection and support as well as for economic recovery,” reported the press release. /argumentum.al
