TIRANA, May 30 – Serbia which has reached an “extremely favorable” deal with Russia for supplies of natural gas following a telephone conversation of President Aleksandar Vucic with Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to break the EU sanctions while Kosovo raised the alarm on such an act.
Vucic said on May 29 that the three-year agreement will provide Serbia with natural gas at the “most favorable price in Europe.”
“We will sign a three-year contract, and tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will discuss the quantities of gas,” Vucic said as quoted by Serb media.
The price of gas that Serbia will receive from Russian energy giant Gazprom is three times lower than what other European nations pay. In winter that price would be 10 to 12 times lower, officials said.
Gazprom, directly or through its subsidiaries, is the majority owner of substantial energy assets in Serbia.
The Kremlin said in a statement that Putin told Vucic that an “acceptable solution” would be found for the price of Russian gas for Serbia.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck expressed concerns on Sunday that EU unity was “starting to crumble” as the bloc prepares to meet to discuss an oil embargo and further efforts to cut reliance on Russian energy.
In a comment on the above accord the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti highlighted the strengthening of the relations between Russia and Serbia while the latter demands to join the EU.
Kurti launched an appeal to Brussels to wake up and not tolerate such a behavior of Belgrade.
“They (Vucic and Putin) do not need to meet anymore. Putin and Vucic made agreements through phone talks,” said Kurti.
