TIRANA, June 24 – Albanian political forces of all wings greeted the decision of the Bulgarian parliament to lift the veto on North Macedonia which paves the way for the start of the accession talks with the EU along with Albania.
Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday that the European Union must now act quickly, following the decision of the Bulgarian Parliament to lift the veto on North Macedonia in the process of opening negotiations.
He praised the decisive role of Boyko Borissov in this decision, while saying that “his party GERB and others saved the face of Bulgaria and the EU”.
“I just got a call from Boyko Borissov. I could not thank him enough for his good opinion that he called me, but I could thank him for his decisive role in removing the veto in parliament! True friend, true leader. His party GERB and others saved the face of Bulgaria and the EU! Now the EU must act quickly,” Rama said.
In the meantime, President Ilir Meta welcomed the vote by the Bulgarian parliament to lift the veto on Northern Macedonia, which, according to him, “paves the way for the start of membership negotiations for both our countries.”
“Finally the long-awaited news came from friendly Bulgaria, which has always been a staunch supporter of our membership process. We are waiting for the next news from the European Council meeting, which is still going on,” said Meta.
Democratic Party Deputy Chairman Luciano Boci, on behalf of his political force and parliamentary group, hailed the Bulgarian parliament for lifting the veto on North Macedonia. This is a key first step in unblocking Albania and North Macedonia’s accession negotiations with the European Union.
