TIRANA, April 22 – Former Minister of Interior, Saimir Tahiri has addressed a request to the Supreme Court for the suspension of his imprisonment.
Tahiri, sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for abuse of office, has demanded his release, saying that his life is in danger in Fier prison.
He said that he is serving his sentence in a regular security prison where there are also convicts of the Lazarat and Xibraka groups, who were arrested while Tahiri was interior minister.
“Tahiri has held the position of former Minister of Interior of the Republic of Albania and he risks and can become the object of criminal inmates who are serving their sentences,” said the request published by local media on Friday.
The Special Court of Appeals Against Corruption and Organized Crime ruled in retrial of the case in February this year that Tahiri should serve a prison sentence. Tahiri demands that this decision be suspended and that the decision of the Court of First Instance for Serious Crimes be upheld. That decision was made in September 2019 setting a ‘probation service’ for the former minister. /Argumentum.al
