TIRANA, August 14 – Dozens of owners of the Porto Palermo area in Himara, leaders of coastal organizations as well as political representatives of the Greek minority in Albania, namely the heads of PBDNJ and OMONIA Vangjel Dule and Fredi Beleri, respectively, held a protest rally against the government’s latest decision on Saturday evening.
According to the government decision, the government of PM Edi Rama declares the area from Llamani Bay to the entrance of Qeparoi a protected natural area, with the claim of protecting the natural assets of this area. However, according to the speakers of Saturday’s protest, a secret prospective agreement with the oligarchs who are devouring the lands of the Himara citizens in all forms is hidden behind this decision.
Land owners in Porto Palermo categorically rejected the government’s decision. They said that they have submitted their complaints to most of the foreign embassies in the country and court. According to the leaders of the Greek minority, there was an immediate appeal from the Greek authorities for this decision, while according to Dule and Bejleri, the case will be submitted to the international court in Strasbourg.
The speakers spoke in two languages, Albanian and Greek.
The leaders of the protest have stated that this is just the beginning of the international reactions to this issue. In an interview, Vangjel Dule stated that at a time when people should be on vacation, they are forced to protest.
According to Dule, property of Himara is being taken from legal residents to be given to the oligarchs and businessmen of the prime minister’s court. He added that this area is being robbed in a systematic way, having no other precedent in any country in the world as property is being stolen there. Dule stated that Albania does not deserve a status in the EU because of what is happening.
