TIRANA – The consecutive statements of the US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim on the thorny issue of the justice reform keep politicians of both majority and opposition ping-ponging blames on who is hidden after those politicians impeding the reform in Albania’s justice system.
On Monday, Enkelejd Alibeaj, a former justice minister during the rule of the Democratic Party, lashed out at majority saying as quoted by News 24 TV that the majority is interested to smash the justice reform.
In an unprecedented diplomatically statement US Ambassador Kim spoke last Thursday after meeting key state and government figures of ‘rumors of a back-room’ deal to kill justice reform in Albania. “I hope there is no truth to rumors of a back-room deal to kill justice reform in Albania. Reform is painful, slow and imperfect, but it is necessary, making progress and must continue.” This was the full post of Ambassador Kim on her Twitter account.
According to Alibeaj, the stance of the (US) Ambassador is very strong. “The only segment which can prevent or take forward the justice reform is the majority. No legal change can be made by this parliament which is illegitimate,” said the DP key official.
President Ilir Meta said in a statement on My 22 this year that the US Ambassador was not talking about him. “I have met the ambassador several times. I had very good relations with her and I had many meetings. In my obligations I try to be as punctual as possible and not misuse the image of anyone. I am telling you this is the platform that was handed over to the US ambassador and then to the other ambassadors,” said Meta who lashed out at PM Edi Rama for having captured the media and destroyed the rule of law.
In Monday’s statement the DP official, Alibeaj said majority aims at hitting the justice reform in its heart. “Now they want to strike on the vetting process. The guilt should be found in the majority people,” he said.
In a statement on May 22 PM Edi Rama said that he was ready to sit at a round table with President Meta, the opposition inside and outside parliament and with the interested parties to discuss justice reform.
In the meantime, it is scheduled a meeting of the Political Council on the electoral reform to be held on Tuesday as there is a countdown because the deadline for the conclusion of the electoral reform is May 31. /argumentum.al
