TIRANA – The Democratic Party (DP) – led united opposition coalition will back a second mandate of President Ilir Meta if it wins the upcoming general elections. This was declared by the DP head, Lulzim Basha in a talk show on TV Klan on Thursday answering a question.
“Without doubt we will support him… Ilir Meta has played the appropriate role in defense of the Constitution,” said Basha, who had a live phone conversation with the chairman of the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI), Monika Kryemadhi who reconfirmed the coalition with the DP. At that time Kryemadhi was in a talk show on the local Syri.net TV.
In a further comment during the talk the SMI’s head, who is wife of President Meta, said that as the DP is the largest party of the opposition coalition it belongs to its head Basha to be premier after an eventual electoral victory.
Albania is expected to hold general elections next year, and there is a heated debate on the electoral reform between the main political forces and the international fact, particularly the US Ambassador, Yuri Kim, are encouraging a deal among them by the end of May.
In a post on Twitter on Thursday on the deliberations of the Political Council of the Electoral Reform US Ambassador Kim said: “Good to hear that the Political Council on Electoral Reform is making more progress. I have met all the members – Rudina Hajdari, Damian Gjiknuri, Oerd Bylykbashi, Petrit Vasili – and I believe they will make wise decisions. Thank you for putting Albania’s future first!”
As a follow up of Thursday’s debate on a future ruling government scheme SMI’s Kryemadhi said mentioning other coalition parties of the united opposition as the following: “It belongs to him (Basha) to be PM. We have signed an agreement on April 23, 2019 at Tirana Hotel. It was an agreement on electoral and political coalition.”
In the separate parallel TV talk show DP’s head Basha said President Meta was playing his constitutional task for not allowing the obvious target of the government to seize the judicial institutions. “He has made this now, and continues to do it. This is not news,” said Basha. /argumentum.al
