Dear Madam or Sir,
Dear friends,
On May 30th Croatia is celebrating Statehood Day, the 30th anniversary when the first modern mul.party Croa.an Parliament was constituted, following the 1990 Croa.an parliamentary elections.
Croa.an parliamentarism has a long tradition, it has been the guardian ofour statehood for centuries
Also, on this day, with excep.onal gra.tude and respect, we remember all those who defended and succeeded in defending the independence, sovereignty and integrity of Croatia
During the years of independence, Croatia has achieved significant foreign policy successes and today, as an ac.ve member of the international community, of the EU and NATO, works together with partners and allies on achieving and maintaining global peace and security
This year is special one because as of January 1st Croatia has assumed the six month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time, six and a half years a Mer becoming a European Union member state.
The Presidency is an important moment for Croatia, completing our historical cycle from independence to strong affirmation in Europe and the world.
Chess players like to say: „Una domus sumus ‐ We are one family“, and I believe that this aUtude, in the best possible way, expresses our common mission ‐ we must grasp every opportunity to promote common, universal values and make this world beVer place.
Diplomats are like “unique flowers”,we have a habit of falling uncri.cally in love with the host country. Due to this “blind” but noble love, few years later we have to leave the host country.
However, during our pos.ng, nothing prevents us, together with other diplomats, in coopera.on with government officials, citizens, non‐ governmental organizations, students, from trying to create a posi.ve environment in society.
This is my vision of beVer environment, which is linked to cooperation, deepening of existing friendships, relations, in all segments of society, from politics, through the economy, to sports, culture, science and stronger connec.on of our own country with a host country.
But as things stand, we will have to postpone this speech for another, happier occasion I want to believe that this will happen soon.
Until then, we all have to be responsible, because only such behavior will allow us to return to normality
Therefore, in that name I raise this virtual glass of great Croatian wine– cheers!
Zlatko Kramarić
