TIRANA, May 20 – President Ilir Meta said on Friday that the monitoring of prices by the boards set up by the government has served only the propaganda of the government and has not really protected the citizens.
“I have consistently expressed concerns about the impact on households and the deepening of poverty due to the skyrocketing rise of prices. The monitoring of prices by the boards has only served the propaganda of the government and has not really protected the citizens and in particular the needy from the heavy burden of the growth of the cost of living,” said Meta.
“My suggestion has been the need for social protection policies through indexation of salaries, pensions and economic assistance,” said the President.
“The mission of the International Monetary Fund in the last statement noted that Albania is facing two blows to its economy, rising prices and the risk of foreign financing of public debt. The International Monetary Fund has advised the Government on the need for well-oriented support for the poor and the exposed strata in order to protect them from the effects of rising prices,” he stressed.
Meta said that, “it also remains necessary to reduce public debt and especially the need for its refinancing.” /Argumentum.al
