TIRANA, June 13 – The General Director of the Albanian State Police, Gledis Nano held a special meeting with the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray in the framework of his several-day visit to Washington where he also met with senior officials of law enforcement agencies.
FBI Director Wray commended Nano for his courage and professionalism in running the State Police and reaffirmed the unwavering support of US law enforcement agencies for the police force of this Balkan country which is gripped by threatening criminality and dozens of gangs of organized crime operate within the country with strong links with drug cartels. Politicians are involved in this dangerous network, and an ample example is the imprisonment of the former interior minister and some other ministers. A few days ago the Italian police detained the former Mayor of Vora, Kajmaku, who is known to have been selected as candidate for the mayoral post by PM Edi Rama. Kajmaku was seized in possession of 20kg of cocaine.
Nano’s visit to Washington strengthened the strong and cooperative relations between the Albanian State Police and the US government, it is said in the announcement of the state police released on Monday.
Earlier, Albania’s top police also met with the Deputy Attorney General, at the same time Advisor for International Affairs of the Department of Justice, Bruce Swartz, the Head of Foreign Operations of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), George Papadopoulos, and senior executives from the Bureau Diplomacy of the State Department for Narcotics Security and International Affairs and Law Enforcement.
The visit to Washington, according to state police, reconfirmed the US-Albania partnership and the importance of fighting corruption and organized crime in Albania through joint operations, training and close cooperation with the US.
