The Commissioner for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) has condemned the discriminatory behavior of the member of the Special Appellate Panel (KPA) Genta Bungo against Prosecutor Elisabeta Imeraj.
Through a press release issued on Sunday, this institution said that it became aware of the case of provincial prejudice through online media, and that such behaviors are unacceptable. Discriminatory messages were published by Prosecutor Imeraj herself revealing that KPA member Genta Bungo told her colleague that Elisabeta Imeraj is a ‘mountaineer (maloke) from Tropoja’ and should be fired.
Prosecutor Imeraj described this as a pure case of discrimination, emphasizing that she could not be penalized because of her origin.
Tropoja is in northern Albania and the division between North and South has been much evident during the communist regime as southerners were linked with the then ruling Party of Labor of Albania. The current Socialist Party is a ‘continuation’ of PLA regarding membership and southern support.
The Imeraj case has provoked strong reactions in the ranks of politics and public opinion. The CPD called on citizens to signal similar cases, assuring them that they are protected by law. /Argumentum.al
