TIRANA, August 26 – The special envoy of the United States of America for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has said that corruption in the Balkans is a big problem.
He said that the US wants to see the European road open for all the countries of the Western Balkans.
“Corruption is a big problem in the whole region. I am happy to see that during the accession process the focus is on the rule of law as a condition for EU membership,” said Escobar as quoted by local media on Saturday.
He said, among other things, that the Biden administration is committed to the fight against corruption, while warning that some people from North Macedonia are expected to be sanctioned by the United States.
“President Biden’s administration is committed to the fight against corruption. I can’t talk about the sanctions, but you can be sure there will be,” said Escobar.
The last senior political official to be declared non grata in Albania by the US was former premier Sali Berisha, who is also leader of the Democratic Party, a political force traditionally closely linked with the US since its creation after the fall of the communist regime in Tirana, but the relations of Berisha and his followers worsened with the current government of democrats in Washington for ‘unrevealed’ reasons. /argumentum.al
