On 20 December 2019, the German Government has officially notified the Albanian Government that it will provide a grant amounting to EUR 4 million for emergency relief after the earthquake that severely hit Albania on 26 November. The money will be allocated to the German Development

Bank (KfW) as implementing partner.

The grant will be used to support reconstruction measures of schools and other public buildings in the areas of Tirana, Durres, Kruja etc. – the areas most affected by the earthquake. The buildings will be reconstructed in accordance with the future needs of the people, that mean they will be made earthquake safe and energy efficient.

Concerning this support, the German Ambassador to Albania, Peter Zingraf, said: “Germany will beassisting Albania in the rebuilding of schools and public institutions. This grant is one element of German support to the country after the earthquake of 26 November that has traumatised many

Albanians. Rebuilding public institutions will be one element to slowly restore daily life and normality.”

The German reconstruction effort, to be implemented by KfW Development Bank will be fully aligned with interventions that are already foreseen by Albanian institutions as well as closely coordinated with the reconstruction efforts from various development partners in the country led by the EU..

In this way it will be assured that there will be no overlapping of measures among different institutions.

KfW is one of the world’s leading promotional banks. With its decades of experience, KfW is committed to improving economic, social and environmental living conditions all around the world on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal States. In Albania, KfW implements the German Financial Cooperation and provides grant aid and concessional loans for key investments and project-related consultancy services. The German cooperation with Albania started in 1988.

Since then, the German Government has committed more than one billion EUR for development projects in the fields of Municipal Infrastructure, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development in Albania
