TIRANA – Serbia has purchased Chinese medium-range, radar-guided surface-to-air missiles, teported EUobserver on Tuesday.
“The biggest part of imports is related to the modernisation of MIG-29 planes, the procurement of drone systems,… (and) air-defence system FK-3,” sadi the state-run arms company Jugoimport SDPR’s annual report, seen by Reuters news agency.
China has invested heavily in the Balkan region as part of its One Belt, One Road initiative.
The Chinese military supply to Serbia comes as part of an armament drive by this Balkan country whose main military supplies are provided by Russia. The MIG-29 planes have also been supplied by Russia to Serbia.
The timing of such an intensive military built up by Belgrade has raised again the question of the reasons behind it when much is spoken on regional cooperation to promote peace and stability. Does the EU aspiration of Serbia towards joining the Western block, an aspiration of all WB countries, comply with the spirit of furthering regional stability at a time when Belgrade’s military arsenal is being beefed up by Russia and China?/argumentum.al
