TIRANA, November 14 – President Vjosa Osmani has set December 18 as the date for holding extraordinary elections for mayors of municipalities in the north of Kosovo, an announcement released by the presidency said on Monday. Osmani met the representatives of the political parties to set the date of the extraordinary elections for the mayors of the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo.
“I want to assure all the Serbian citizens of Kosovo that the decision to announce elections is a constitutional obligation that arose from the act of resignation of the four mayors. It is not a matter of desire or a decision that can be changed, because there is no other way,” emphasized Osmani.
The four municipalities inhabited by a majority of Serbs – North Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and Zveçan – have been without mayors since November 5. The mayors of Serbian nationality resigned as a sign of opposition to the decision of the government of Kosovo to start the process for reregistration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates.
The President said that she will address a request to all international partners “for election monitoring and as much international participation as possible in this election process”.
Representatives of Vetevendosje, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosovo, as well as other minority parties in Kosovo participated in this meeting.
However, the representatives of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and those of the Serbian List were not present.
Such a decision was made against an intensive activity of the EU and the US for Kosovo and Serbia to overcome the latest increase of tension.
