TIRANA, July 9 – The Macedonian opposition has announced the termination of all contacts with the government of the Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovacevski, regarding constitutional changes, but also other issues and that “from now on it will focus only on the request for early parliamentary elections”.
The governing bodies of VMRO DPMNE, according to its chairman Hristijan Mickoski quoted by RFE/RL on Saturday, decided a few days ago to cancel all contacts with the government, except for those related to the parliamentary elections in autumn.
“We will not have any communication with the government… There is only one thing on which we can discuss: to agree on when the elections will be held,” said Mickoski.
The decision of VMRO DPMNE comes at a time when the ruling parties are seeking the support of the opposition for the approval of the constitutional changes, necessary for the continuation of the membership process in the European Union, and the changes must be made for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in the preamble of the Constitution as a state-forming people.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bujar Osmani, said on Sunday that the decision of the VMRO- DPMNE proves that “the opposition party neither wants nor intends to ever face any challenge that has to do with the state, but that its primary goal is to come to power”.
Despite not securing two-thirds of the votes in the Parliament, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski announced on Friday that the constitutional amendments will soon be sent to the Parliament for approval. Prime Minister Kovacevski rejected the opposition’s request for elections, informing them that the next elections will be held in 2024. /argumentum.al
