TIRANA – The so called Political Commission on the Electoral Reform has failed to patch up differences to strike a consensual deal on a new electoral system in Albania despite an open intervention of the US Embassy to have the bargain finished on May 31.
“Opposition offered the consensus. But the Socialist Party (SP) is not ready,” said the Democratic Party (DP) co-chairman of the Commission, Oerd Bylykbashi in a press conference after the 4-hour meeting. “Opposition does not abandon the guarantees of the ballot,” he said announcing that even after the end of the 31 May deadline the opposition was ready to continue work expecting that the ruling Socialist Party (SP) will make tolerations.
In the meantime Petrit Vasili, deputy head of the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI), a junior ally in the DP-led united opposition, said SP is not ready for a compromise aiming to maintain the previous electoral system.
In the meantime the DP co-chairman of the Commission said the biometrical identifying documents for the electors means the depoliticizing of the electoral commissions.
In a comment after the end of the deadline of the mandate of the Commission the ruling Socialist Party said it was waiting for the opposition to ‘wake up!”/ argumentum.al
