TIRANA, May 16 – As it was expected the Parliament failed to elect the new President of Albania in the first round of voting because no name of any candidate was presented in the plenary session on Monday afternoon.
The process of electing a new president has sparked much debate and discussion in recent weeks.
In her speech in the Assembly, Klotilda Bushka said that no candidacy has been submitted.
In this way, the convened meeting was held very briefly, while the Speaker of the Parliament, Lindita Nikolla announced that the Conference of Chairmen will be convened on Tuesday.
Speaking after the failure of the first attempt PM Edi Rama advised the opposition to find consensus.
Asked with which political force Socialists do not negotiate Rama said it is known with whom they do not negotiate for any reason and refuse to consider. “We are ready to talk to any party that would like to talk to us. But if not, we will wait patiently and the moment we enter the fourth round we will use the mandate given to us by the Constitution to elect the president. We have no other way,” Rama said.
According to the Constitution amended by Rama and Sali Berisha in 2008, the majority can elect the president with 71 deputies in the 140-member Parliament. /Argumentum.al
