TIRANA, January 10 – The former Minister of Defense, the chairman of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, was accused on Tuesday by the special authority for serious crime, SPAK, of abuse of office in the tragedy of Gërdec, where 26 people lost their lives on March 15, 2008, and many others were injured after an explosion at a weapons dismantling plant.
On leaving SPAK headquarters, Mediu, who in 2008 was the Minister of Defense, said that he was presented with the same accusation as in 2009.
“I want to inform you that the same dossier was presented to me by the same prosecutors with the same charge. So, they it is the accusation of the prosecutors of 2009. An accusation that was entirely politically motivated was presented even today, without adding any document and any additional evidence,” said Mediu.
“The accusation was of abuse of office,” said Mediu, who added that “I asked from the beginning to be questioned, I have never been questioned about this issue.”
Asked where the political motive is here, Mediu said that the political motive is in the accusation that has been made and it is not the minister’s order that created the problem and this has been proven in court.
Asked if there is any new evidence, Mediu said that there was no document and no additional element that is related to the case and my accusation.
Regarding the attitude towards the accusation, Mediu said that, “I do not accept this accusation. I am innocent”. /Argumentum.al
