The idea on changing the borders in the Western Balkans could only be implemented if it were mandated by the United Nations, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic has said during a press conference for Serbian media.
Although expressing himself bluntly against
border changes in public statements Vucic is the only leader in the region who keeps advocating land swaps in the region if UN is involved in that undertaking.
Vucic has become known of the land swamp scheme which has been allegedly framed with the Albania’s PM Edi Rama and former President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci. The EU sponsored Pristina-Belgrade has been dragging without reaching any breakthrough for many years.
But it’s some time the Tirana’s government head has avoided such a scheme given the fact that former president of Kosovo Hashim Thaci, part of it, is being tried at the Hague Tribunal.
In the past weeks, several regional, as well as international media, have been circulating the idea of changing the borders in the Balkans, particularly making reference to a “non-paper”.
EU top officials assert to not have seen the memo, while Germany has taken a staunch stance against the idea, describing it as “dangerous”.
Even the Slovenian President, Borut Pahor, whose country was mentioned as origin of that document, rejected it categorically when he was in Tirana last week saying that ‘smells war in the Western Balkans.

For his part the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg has also reacted regarding the ‘non-paper’ document, saying that he hasn’t seen the “unofficial document” related with the changes of the Balkan borders, over which there have been allegations that it was sent from the Slovenian PM, Janez Jansha to the President of the European Council, Charles Michael.
After the meeting held in the headquarters of NATO in Brussels with the president of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski stated that speculations according the border changes cause insecurities and danger for the stability in the region.
“Any speculation regarding this topic is useless. For NATO, security and stability in the Western Balkans is what’s important. This is important for the security of the region and Europe. NATO supports the stability of the region in various methods,” said Stoltenberg.
