The Council of Albanian Ambassadors has issued a strong statement condemning recent remarks by a Serbian government minister, describing them as chauvinistic rhetoric that revives concepts associated with the ethnic cleansing of Albanians. The Council warns that such statements undermine European values, threaten regional stability, and demonstrate a failure to fully distance Serbia from the ideology that fueled the wars and atrocities in the former Yugoslavia. It calls on Albania to take diplomatic action and urges coordinated engagement with Kosovo, the European Union, NATO, and strategic partners.
Declaration of the Council of Albanian Ambassadors
Tirana, 15 July 2026
The Council of Albanian Ambassadors strongly condemns the recent statements by a Serbian Government minister that revive concepts associated with the ethnic cleansing of Albanians. Such rhetoric contradicts European values and threatens regional stability.
These remarks follow a pattern of statements that relativize past policies, raising concerns that Serbia has not fully distanced itself from the ideology responsible for war and atrocities in the former Yugoslavia.
The Council also recalls the documented discrimination against Albanians in the Preševo Valley, including the mass deactivation of residential addresses, often regarded as modern genocide.
The Council reiterates that the independence of Kosovo is an irreversible reality. Albania should respond through a formal diplomatic démarche to the Serbian Ambassador in Tirana and, in coordination with Kosovo, raise the issue with the European Union, NATO, and strategic partners.
The Balkans need responsible leadership committed to international law, human rights, and good-neighborly relations, not the return of hate speech and aggressive nationalism.
