TIRANA – In a strong appeal made public on Tuesday President Ilir Meta has called on the parties to preserve the spirit of the results of the June 5 agreement warning the ruling Socialist Party to give up the constitutional amendments scheduled to be approved by Parliament on July 30.
“The insistence to stick stubbornly to the date of July 30, which has been set without having any concrete objective, damages the stability and the European path of Albania,” said Meta in his message which adds to a tense discourse on Albania’s political scene against the background of the deadly coronavirus pandemic which is playing havoc in this Balkan country.
President Meta also called on the Democratic Party (DP) and the United Opposition to continue with persistence and without retreating the efforts to achieve a consensual product in the name of European integration of Albania. “Maintaining the spirit and results of the June 5 agreement is very important for the opening of the EU accession negotiations,” he said.
Further on he called on the Socialist Party to abandon the unilateral and inclusive change of the Constitution. According to him, the date July 30 is not related to any interest of Albania. “July 30 must be canceled to pave the way for a comprehensive and consensual electoral reform process.”
In addition Meta said the current parliament is beyond any standard to touch the Constitution.
Moreover the head of state drew the attention that in the situation when citizens are dying and the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic is becoming threatening any violation of the Constitution will hold historically responsible all those who will provoke the constitutional order in the country.
“The constitution cannot be changed without consensus among all the main political parties in the country. The time to work for Albania in Europe is now!” President concluded. /argumentum.al
