On the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the association “Montenegrin Community in Albania”
Eight years ago, driven by a clear vision and a sincere commitment to preserving identity and strengthening the community, the association “Montenegrin Community in Albania” (ZCGA) was founded by a group of dedicated individuals: Marinko Ćulafić, Ružica Rašović, Milka Jojić, Diana Šoškić, Ibrahim Džonbalić, Viktor Jojić, Fatma Kaludjerović, and Lidia Ćulafić.
These names represent not only the founding of a structured organization, but also a lasting commitment to serving as both the voice and a bridge for the Montenegrin community in Albania.
Since its establishment, the association has built its work on two main and inseparable pillars.
First, the affirmation and strengthening of the role of the Montenegrin community as an integral part of Albania’s social mosaic. This is a long-term process that requires continuous dedication and a comprehensive approach, with full respect for religious, linguistic, gender, and cultural diversity.
Second, the promotion and recognition of the valuable contributions made by individuals of Montenegrin origin, who over the years have left a meaningful mark in fields such as culture, science, education, history, sports, and folklore. This effort has helped raise awareness of the Montenegrin community as an inseparable part of Albanian society’s development.
Over these eight years, the association has organized a wide range of important activities, many of which have now become a tradition. Among the most notable are:
● The annual commemoration on January 6 in Shëngjin of the tragedy of the sinking of the ship “Brindisi”, one of the most tragic events in Montenegrin history, in which around 400 emigrants lost their lives.
● The celebration of May 21, Montenegro’s Independence Day, as a moment of reflection and national pride.
● The organization of commemorative activities on June 4, marking the Day of Saint Vladimir of Duklja, held in the village of Shijon in Elbasan.
● The celebration of July 13, Statehood Day of Montenegro, promoting historical and state-building values.
● The organization of cultural events, meetings, and intercultural activities that strengthen identity and foster coexistence.
One of the association’s most significant achievements has been its consolidation as an important representative body of the Montenegrin community in Albania. Through continuous engagement, it has built bridges of cooperation with national and international institutions and ensured active participation in processes concerning the rights of national minorities.
A particularly important milestone in this journey is its membership in FUEN (Federal Union of European Nationalities) since 2023, the largest European organization dedicated to the protection of minority rights. This marks a historic step, as for the first time a Montenegrin association has become part of such a prominent international network.
Among the association’s most active contributors over the years are distinguished intellectuals of Montenegrin origin, including Nikolla Sudar, Romina Radonšić, Angjelina Kallugjerović, Meri Hodrović, Nida Jovani, Bruna Osmanović, Dejan Ćulafić, and many others.
Of course, this journey has not been without challenges. Preserving identity in an increasingly dynamic environment, ensuring sustainable financial support, and fostering greater youth involvement remain key priorities for the future. Nevertheless, these challenges have served as a driving force to strengthen determination and continue the mission.
Today, after eight years, the association stands more consolidated than ever, with clear objectives for the future: to expand its activities, increase youth engagement, strengthen cooperation, and continue its mission of preserving and promoting Montenegrin identity in Albania.
On the occasion of this important anniversary, in my capacity as a representative of the Montenegrin National Minority, I express my deep gratitude to the founders, members, and all collaborators who have contributed to this journey. Without their dedication and trust, these achievements would not have been possible.
Happy 8th anniversary to the “Montenegrin Community in Albania,” with the belief that the years ahead will bring even greater success and accomplishments.
