TIRANA, December 7 – The President of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, requested even more engagement of the European Union in the Western Balkans region and not only when there is a war or immigration crisis in the Continent.
Pendarovski spoke on Wednesday at the discussion session in Brussels about the historic EU-Western Balkans summit held in Tirana on Tuesday, which he described as a significant event.
“The milestone, let’s say, the main event in North Macedonia in relation to the negotiations (with the EU), happened in the summer when we removed the blockade from a member of the European Union that had impeded us from this progress. We are already in the process of analyzing the legislation that should last for 14 months and should end in November of next year and then we will continue with the opening of the clusters of chapters. However, I can say that there is no Euro-enthusiasm”, he said.
Pendarovski expressed skepticism towards the EU’s stance on enlargement.
“I want to see if the EU will return to the daily work or ordinary issues to talk about internal problems, which will get what, and lose attention in the Western Balkans after the end of the war in Ukraine. So, I want to see if the Western Balkans will come back into the focus of the European Union only when there is another immigration crisis or when there is another war in the continent,” said Pendarovski. /Argumentum.al
